Testing was undertaken at a development site at the rear of Kavanagh’s, 10 South Main Street, Naas, on 12 April 2001. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Naas. The western end of the site fronts onto Abbey Street (Lower), where human remains, associated with the 17th-century Dominican friary, were uncovered in 1995 by Martin Reid (Excavations 1995, No. 157, 95E0042) and in 1996 by Patricia Lynch (Excavations 1996, No. 194, 96E0011).
The mechanical excavation of five trenches took place within the confines of the existing site boundaries. In all cases a rubble fill, up to 1.3m in depth, was uncovered overlying the ‘natural’ subsoil. This fill, which has been noted at other sites in the immediate area, appears to be of 19th-century origin.
No features or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered.
