Test excavations comprising five cuttings were undertaken at a proposed development site at Dublin Road, Naas, Co. Kildare. The development area is immediately adjacent to a medieval cemetery in the town of Naas and in a designated zone of archaeological potential. Test excavations were previously undertaken here in 1995 by Claire Mullins (Excavations 1995, No. 160, 95E0279), with further test excavations carried out in December 2000 by Michael Tierney and Sarah Halpin (Excavations 2000, No. 507, 00E0842). These excavations recorded significant human skeletal remains in the southern portion of the site.

This current phase of testing relates to a new phase of construction at Mallon’s Garage on another area of the site along the Dublin Road. Five test-trenches were excavated in the area by machine and subsequently continued by hand down to subsoil level. The area had been severely disturbed in the past by the insertion of subsurface fuel tanks for the garage. Consequently no archaeological features were recorded during this phase of testing. Two sherds of medieval ware were recovered from a disturbed context.
