Trench excavation works associated with the provision of new underground cable routes were monitored during 2001. The first phase of works was carried out from 8 May to 1 June 2001. These works were located from Main Street to the Abbey Street Telephone Exchange and through the existing public carpark.
A second phase of works was carried out from 7 to 14 December 2001 along St John’s Lane and at the St John’s House/Naas Shopping Centre carpark.
In general, the trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 0.8m and were up to 0.5m wide. No features or deposits of archaeological interest were uncovered. Two sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from a topsoil layer at the location of a new substation at the Abbey Street carpark.
