Monitoring took place in advance of an extension to a domestic dwelling. The site is located in ‘Mulhall’s Fort’, a ringfort in the townland of Graigues, near Robertstown, Co. Kildare. Monitoring by Georgina Scally preceding the construction of the original dwelling in the early 1990s revealed that, with the exception of two field drains and a number of relatively modern post-holes, no features or finds of any archaeological significance were uncovered on the site (Excavations 1991, No. 74).
The foundations of the extension were dug to the top of the natural soil. The fill of the foundation trenches consisted of redeposited garden soils. Cut into the natural subsoil was a linear feature that represents a drain or ditch associated with a modern hedgerow that runs close to the dwelling. A study of the various editions of Ordnance Survey maps suggests that the hedgerow was erected sometime between 1838 and 1911. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered.
