Archaeological investigations undertaken at this site during 1999 uncovered the remains of the Franciscan friary (founded c. 1258) as well as associated human skeletal material (Excavations 1999, No. 366). Additional testing was undertaken in February 2001 to obtain further information regarding possible boundary walls associated with the friary in order to assess the impact that a redesigned development layout might have on such features.
Following a grant of planning permission, the first phase of monitoring was undertaken from 28 November to 6 December 2001. This was carried out in relation to the construction of the access road (part of the Clane bypass) through the site. No features, deposits or structures of archaeological interest were uncovered, although ten sherds of pottery (seven medieval and three post-medieval) and a fragment of a human pelvis were recovered.
In addition, the topsoil was dumped and spread in the area immediately north of the existing graveyard, as required by a planning condition.
Further monitoring will be undertaken during the next few years.
