Monitoring, associated with a single residential development at Castledillon Lower, Straffan, Co. Kildare, was undertaken on 25–26 July 2001. The development area is to the east of a tower-house site (SMR 14:15).
All topsoil-stripping and general levels’ reduction of the surface of the underlying subsoil was monitored. No features or deposits of archaeological potential were uncovered. Pottery sherds of both medieval and post-medieval date were recovered from a layer of fill on the southern end of the site. This material was introduced to the site, at some unknown time in the past, in order to fill a natural hollow. While it is tempting to speculate that this fill material may have come from the adjacent castle site, this cannot be proven.
