Testing was undertaken at a proposed development site at Carlowgate, Castledermot, on 20 January 2001. The site is within the designated zone of archaeological potential, being directly south of the line of the town wall and adjacent to the partially extant site of Carlowgate. Investigations undertaken by Clare Mullins (Excavations 1998, No. 299, 98E0225) uncovered the foundation remains of the town wall and an associated possible ditch to the north of the development site.
Four trenches were mechanically excavated within the confines of the existing site boundaries. The siting of the trenches was partially determined by the foundation/floor slab remains of an unfinished dwelling dating from the early 1980s. No features or finds of archaeological potential were revealed.
