Testing was undertaken at a development site on the eastern side of an unnamed road which links Main Street with Carlowgate Street, Castledermot.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with Phase 1 of the scheme was undertaken by Elizabeth O’Brien (Excavations 1990, No. 68). Furthermore, a programme of trial-trenching associated with Phase 2, undertaken by Edmond O’Donovan (Excavations 1995, No. 145, 95E0265), revealed a ditch of possible 13th/14th-century date, a pit of possible medieval date and associated pottery sherds of medieval date. Consequently he undertook an excavation at the site (Excavations 1996, No. 176) which concentrated on areas due to be disturbed by the new development and uncovered 22 pits of medieval date.
The current programme of testing was carried out in two phases, 30 October and 30 November, owing to the fact that not all the land was under the control of the development agency. Ten trenches were excavated within the boundaries of the site. No features, deposits or structures were uncovered, although four sherds of medieval pottery were recovered.
It was suggested that no further archaeological intervention was required within the boundaries of the site and that all trench excavations associated with the provision of services outside such boundaries should be monitored.
