Pre-development test excavations were undertaken in the narrow yards to the rear of the Castle Bar (77–79 Upper Rock Street), as documentary sources suggested this area as the possible site of the late medieval structure known as ‘Castle MacEllistrim’, which was described by Smith in 1795 and was partially extant as late as 1841.
Four trenches were excavated within the yard and no evidence of any structure was uncovered; indeed, the trenches showed that the bedrock occurred at a very high level, which would have made the construction of any substantial building on the site quite difficult.
No archaeological features or strata were noted.
