An archaeological assessment was undertaken for a development of 33 dwelling-houses, services and access road in the townland of Shinnagh, Rathmore. A circular enclosure is marked on the first edition OS map in the north-western portion of the development site, but is not marked on the second edition. The enclosure is depicted as being circular in shape and for the most part did not have an above-ground register in the field, with the exception of a section preserved in a field boundary. The levelled bank could be traced by the differential grass growth.
Ten test-trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development site. Trenches 1–6 were excavated in the area of the enclosure to establish its nature and extent. The levelled bank was recorded in five of the trenches and the external ditch in two. The bank varied in width between 4m and 6m, though it must be remembered that this represents the width of the levelled bank. The ditch was recorded c. 1m outside the bank and is c. 3.5m wide.
Trenches 7–10 were opened at random in the remainder of the proposed development site and revealed no archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts.
