Test excavations were undertaken on a Kerry County Council housing site in Milltown, Co. Kerry. Marked on the first edition OS map is a row of houses. They lined the western edge of the southern portion of the development site, facing onto Bleach Road. At the rear of these houses were long narrow plots. The houses are not marked on the second edition OS map of 1897.
Four test-trenches were excavated by machine on the footprint of the proposed house sites. No evidence for house foundations or boundary walls was recorded in the trenches. The licence was extended to incorporate monitoring of all ground disturbances on the housing site. During the course of monitoring three shallow pits were recorded in the area where the first edition houses had been located. The shallow pits were similar in form, plan and context, and 1–4m in diameter; it is likely that they functioned as rubbish-pits. No finds were recovered. No further archaeological features or artefacts were recorded or recovered during monitoring.
