Two grants of planning permission in relation to the development of a residential site at Meanus, Castlemaine, included conditions pertaining to the archaeological potential of the area. Both required that the site be subjected to an archaeological assessment, including testing/intrusive investigation.
The field adjacent to the development includes four sites of archaeological potential: that of a standing stone, a holy well, a bullaun stone and a holy tree. The exact locations of these sites are unknown and there is no cartographic or aerial photographic evidence of them. In addition, there are no surface/extant remains associated with these sites. Furthermore, ecclesiastical remains are located c. 200m to the south of the development area.
Intrusive investigations did not reveal any features or finds of archaeological potential within the confines of the development site.
