Three test-trenches were excavated here on 5 September 2001 in advance of the construction of a single dwelling. This work was required because of the proximity of the proposed development site to a ringfort. Two of the trenches measured 20m long by 4m wide. One of these was excavated across the proposed site of the house itself, while the other was excavated along the length of the proposed driveway area. The third trench, 10m long by 4m wide, was excavated across the proposed site of the percolation area for the septic tank. The trenches were initially stripped with a machine bucket and subsequently cleaned off by hand. Thickness of topsoil varied from 0.25m to 0.45m, coming down onto a reddish-brown clayey silt subsoil with frequent limestone fragments. Nothing of an archaeological nature was encountered.
