Ten test-trenches were excavated at this site on 26 March 2001 in advance of the construction of five houses. The proposed development site is near several enclosures of unknown date. One 10m by 2m trench was excavated across the foundation area of each house and one 8m by 2m trench across the paths of the access road to each house. The trenches were initially stripped with a machine bucket and subsequently cleaned off by hand. The topsoil was stripped off to an average depth of c. 0.2m. The underlying stratum consisted of a naturally occurring well-drained gravelly layer in all trenches. This gravel gradually graded down to an orangey brown natural, which occurred at c. 0.3m depth. Apart from sherds of modern ceramics from the topsoil, nothing of archaeological significance was discovered.
