Test excavation was undertaken as the result of an archaeological assessment in advance of the construction of a local authority housing estate just outside Dingle in the townland of Cappa. Two potential archaeological sites were identified in an area of pasture. The first was a circular feature in the north-eastern end of a field, noticed as a slight circular depression with a bank, perceived as an area of differential grass growth. The depression was more pronounced at its southern end. It measured c. 16m north–south by 13m. The bank measured 3–3.5m in width. In an aerial photograph this feature was evident as a dark circle. The second potential site was a horizontal stone in the south-west of the same field. The boulder was irregular in shape and lying on its long axis. It measured 1.07m in height, 2.3m in length and 0.25m in width. The edges of the stone were quite worn, reflecting its use as a scratching-stone. There were no obvious markings on the boulder.
A trench was opened immediately to the north-east of the stone. A second trench ran from the interior of the circular feature. The results gave no indication of any archaeological features within or adjacent to either the stone or the circular feature.
