This licence covers monitoring of groundworks activities in Ballyheigue village and the four surrounding townlands of Buncurrig, Dirtane, Dromatoor and Dromgower from 8 October 2001 until the end of that year. Prior to the commencement of pipe-laying the site of the new treatment plant in Dromatoor was stripped. Several features of a possible archaeological nature were noted and excavated under a different licence by Jacinta Kiely (see Excavations 2001, No. 563).
Pipe-laying commenced on 30 November 2001. Throughout December operations were confined to the village, in the area of the beach-front carpark and Harty Terrace. In the beach-front area the only feature encountered was a c. 10m stretch of poorly constructed post-medieval cobbling lying directly under the tarmac. On Harty Terrace, below the tarmac was a dark brown organic layer, c. 0.4m in thickness. This layer, which extended for much of the lower part of the street, contained a large amount of post-medieval rubbish. Most of this, such as plastics and tin cans, was clearly later 20th-century in date, but some possibly earlier oyster shells and red brick were included.
Monitoring of these works is continuing in 2002.
