Monitoring took place of a sand and gravel pit, a site of c. 100 acres, in the townland of Ballahacommane, Killarney, Co. Kerry, in an area of archaeological potential. Investigations during Phases 3 and 4 of the development did not reveal any archaeological remains; however, owing to the large scale of the development it is possible that future phases may reveal archaeology.
Phase 3 (5–12 March 2001) consisted of the topsoil clearance of 1.8 acres of the site in Area 2 and the partial backfilling of Area 1 with clearance material from Area 2. A total of 11.8 acres of topsoil overburden had been cleared from the site during Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the development (Excavations 2000, No. 408).
Phase 4 (3–13 September 2001) consisted of the topsoil clearance of 2 acres of the site in Area 2 and the partial backfilling of 1 acre at the southern end of Area 1 with clearance material from Area 2. A total of 13.8 acres of topsoil and blanket bog overburden have been cleared from the site in Areas 1 and 2 during the course of the development to date.
