Monitoring of ground disturbance work associated with the development of sixteen semi-detached holiday homes with roads and footpaths was undertaken during December 2000–January 2001 on the outskirts of Killarney town. Three areas of archaeological significance were uncovered and individual excavation licences were obtained.
This site was on the line of the south-western site boundary and was identified during the excavation of a field drain. As the exposed archaeological stratigraphy was that of a recorded monument, no excavation took place but the site was cleaned and recorded. The exposed feature consisted of an L-shaped deposit of burnt mound material measuring 3.6m east–west by 4.5m with a maximum depth of 0.2m. The fulacht material consisted of 90% heat-shattered sandstones in a black charcoal-enriched matrix. As the excavation work was confined to the recording of the section, no trough or other cut features were excavated.
