Monitoring of ground disturbance work associated with the development of sixteen semi-detached holiday homes with roads and footpaths was undertaken during December 2000–January 2001 outside of Killarney town. Three areas of archaeological significance were uncovered and individual excavation licences were obtained.
This site was in the area of House Site 17. It consisted of thin deposits of burnt mound material, oval in plan and measuring 9m north–south by 4.2m by a maximum of 0.26m in depth. Excavation of the site proved it to be a fulacht fiadh with two troughs and associated pot-boilers; the fills of the troughs indicated a multi-phase use of the site. A number of small pieces of wood were recovered from Trough 1, indicating that it was at least partially wood-lined.
Trough 1 was circular in plan, measuring 1.67m north–south by 1.56m with a maximum depth of 0.65m. Trough 2 was subcircular in plan, measuring 1.3m by 1.67m with a maximum depth of 0.36m. Both troughs were used simultaneously. Trough 1 was later recut and used for smelting metal. A radiocarbon date is awaited.
