Licensed monitoring of all groundworks associated with the development of twelve detached houses at Coolgarriv, Aghadoe, Killarney, was undertaken during December 2000–February 2001 (Excavations 2000, No. 426, 00E0919). Three areas of archaeological potential were uncovered and three separate excavation licences were obtained. The following relates to Site 3, a large area of orange, heat-altered clay.
The area consisted of five large intercutting pits filled with orange clay and red bricks, and measured 15m north–south by 10m. It was truncated in the north by the remains of a post-medieval field boundary, which was shown to be the same ditch excavated in Site 2 (see Excavations 2001, No. 533). Two of the pits had evidence of in situ burning, indicating that the site was used for the manufacture of red bricks. A single piece of blackware was retrieved from the earliest of the pits, indicating a post-medieval date; the subsequent truncation of the site by a post-1840s ditch indicates that the site was abandoned during the 19th century.
