Pre-development testing on the site of a proposed number of commercial and residential units was carried out on 23 January 2001 at Tullinadaly Road, Tuam, Co. Galway. The site was located in the grounds of a large, probably 19th-century, two-storey dwelling with a front garden and large outbuilding. The outbuilding was demolished prior to testing. The site was bounded by the River Nanny to the east and south.
Three trial-trenches were excavated. The stratigraphy consisted of topsoil (Trenches A and C), fill (Trenches B and C) and cobbles (Trench A) on the surface, below which was located fill, mid-brown friable sandy silt loam, boulder clay and bedrock (Trench A); natural subsoil and bedrock (Trench B); sand and gravel (Trench C). Modern artefacts were recovered from the fills and the sandy silt loam. The testing revealed evidence of modern activity on the site, associated with the extant large dwelling and recently demolished outbuilding.
