Monitoring was undertaken during ground preparation in a large greenfield site in Sheeaun townland, Co. Galway, for the development of a gas pipe storage facility for the Gas Pipeline to the West project. Sheeaun lies about 3km south-west of the town of Gort.
The site, totalling about 37.7ha under rough pasture, is close to a number of known archaeological monuments. Ground preparation involved removal of scrub and topsoil to create terraces on the naturally sloped limestone bedrock. The work was monitored on a daily basis from 12 to 26 November 2001.
Despite the presence of ringforts and other monuments in the townland and in the immediate vicinity of the development site, monitoring did not reveal any archaeological deposits or artefactual material.
