As part of extension works to the existing Ballinasloe Landfill Site, approximately 25ha of raised bog was removed from adjacent land, west of the landfill. Monitoring of excavation for a section of the bund wall was undertaken by Sue Zajak between 1 and 24 August 2001 (Excavations 2001, No. 526). The machine excavation of the remainder of the 25ha was monitored between 19 November and 30 January by the writer.

The peat was removed to an average depth of c. 3.5m and was seen to overlay a soft, light grey silty clay with inclusions of fine grit. The peat was a mid-brown colour, darker to the base where it met the subsoil. At this level remains of preserved silver birch trees were also noted.

No archaeological finds or features were noted during the monitoring.
