Pre-development testing of the site of a proposed dwelling-house, garage and septic tank was carried out on 14 March 2001 at Keamsellagh East townland, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway. The proposed development is partially within the constraint zone of a recorded monument, an enclosure.
The proposed development was situated in gently undulating pastureland with good views in most directions. The monument was not extant.
Three trial-trenches were excavated at the site to best cover the area of development nearest the monument’s location (to the east). They were 17.7–39m long, 0.9–1.2m wide and 0.1–0.55m deep.
The stratigraphy consisted of natural subsoil, boulder clay and bedrock, below the topsoil. This represented natural undisturbed stratigraphy. No artefacts were recovered during the testing.
