Pre-development testing was undertaken prior to the conversion of a warehouse and three-storey unit at Bridge Street, Gort, and involved the mechanical excavation of four trenches. Prior to testing, the concrete surface covering the site was cut to enable the excavation to proceed. The stratigraphy revealed in Trenches A, C and D showed no evidence of features/deposits of archaeological significance. In Trench B excavation revealed a stone-lined drain or channel, which ran roughly east–west and would have allowed for the flow of water from the site to the nearby river. This feature may have been associated with the working of the mill at the site. It was noted that the natural layers were found at a greater depth in the east of Trenches A and B, suggesting that the original ground level sloped to the river. Finds from these trenches included occasional modern glass and 19th/20th-century pottery fragments.
