Street, Galway, was undertaken on 14 August 2001. The work involved the demolition of an existing building and the construction of a new retail unit within the zone of archaeological potential for the Anglo-Norman town of Galway.
Five trial-trenches, all 5m long by 1.1m wide, were excavated. Only one contained a layer with archaeological potential. A black silty deposit, known locally as the ‘Galway Layer’, found to the rear of the site at a depth of 0.8m below a rubble fill, was exposed at the base of Trench 5. This layer, containing fragments of shell and animal bone, failed to produce any finds.
