Pre-development testing was undertaken in compliance with a condition in the planning permission. The project involved the demolition of a fertiliser plant, warehousing and associated offices, and the construction of a mixed development comprising office and residential, with associated parking. A photographic and drawing record of the façade of the building was undertaken in addition to pre-development testing.
Eight trenches were mechanically excavated in the area of the development. The stratigraphy revealed showed no evidence of features/deposits of archaeological significance. The layers present suggested that the area had been disturbed previously, as was evident from the modern debris recovered. It appears that the area had been filled with rubble prior to the construction of the warehouse. In Warehouse A it was apparent that the level of the floor had been raised since the construction of the warehouse, and the building had been altered with the addition of a brick wall on top of the original stone structure. The floor levels were probably raised because of the risk of flooding.
