This project concerned the construction of a dwelling-house and associated services within a zone of archaeological potential and adjacent to Ardrahan Castle. It was recommended by Dúchas that pre-development testing, in the form of trial-trenches, be undertaken at the site.
Five trenches were mechanically excavated. The layers present consisted of sod, topsoil and the natural layers, with some modern disturbance in the north-west of Trench A. Finds from the trenches included occasional fragments of 20th-century pottery. The stratigraphy revealed in the trenches did not indicate any evidence of features/deposits or artefacts of archaeological significance. The proposed construction of the dwelling-house and associated services will involve the removal of soil to a depth of 0.45–0.5m. This work would not appear to affect any archaeological layers.
