Dúchas requested the testing of a large field at the junction of Fortunestown Lane and Garter Lane owing to the size of a proposed residential development and its proximity to the zone of archaeological potential for Saggart village (SMR 21:34). The work was undertaken on 21 and 22 February.

The area was investigated by mechanically excavating four trenches. This was undertaken by a 15-tonne Atlas with a 2m bucket. A fifth trench was abandoned owing to deteriorating weather conditions. The trenches were located along the footprint of the proposed development and were parallel to one another. Trench 1 extended for 60m north–south along the western boundary of the site; Trench 2 extended for 80m 22m to the east of Trench 1; Trench 3 was 85m in length and was located 15m east of Trench 2; Trench 4 was located along the eastern boundary of the site and extended for 78m.

The results of the test-trenching would suggest that there are no deposits of archaeological significance on the site. The depth of the ploughsoil would additionally indicate that any archaeological features in the ploughzone would not have survived ploughing. Nonetheless, there were no indications of charcoal spreads or pottery scatters on the field surface and it is likely that the field was never occupied.
