During the course of monitoring of the excavation of a pipeline route in the intertidal zone at Ringsend, a previously unrecorded wreck, composed of wood and some metal, was discovered. The site is on the lower foreshore area in an area exposed only in the hours of low Spring tide on the southern limits of the proposed pipeline route. Initial testing (see Excavations 2001, No. 459) had been undertaken in April and this subsequent testing was undertaken in an effort to establish the limits of the wreck with a view to constructing a cofferdam around it to protect it from the construction works.
A 70m2 grid was placed around the wreck. Six test-trenches were then excavated by hand and mini-digger in areas not tested previously to further define/refine the extent of the subsurface remains. All trenches proved archaeologically negative. No wreck debris or artefacts were noted or recovered. The zone of closest proximity to the pipeline corridor was also examined by metal detection device (licence no. 01R035), with negative results.
