A two-day programme of test excavation was undertaken on this site in May 2001. Four test-trenches, uncovering a total of 45m2 or 18% of the site, were excavated.
No evidence of prehistoric or medieval archaeology was uncovered. Substantial stone walls which appeared to be of post-medieval or early modern date were uncovered toward the rear or south-east of the site. Although the exact nature of these walls could not be ascertained in the limited area investigated, they did appear to represent one large building which pre-dated the current land division, i.e. they appeared to have been cut by the construction of the rear boundary wall.
Inspection of local Ordnance Survey maps suggested that the walls may have formed a part of the neighbouring Catholic church, the floor-plan of which appeared to have been altered and reduced in size between 1843 and 1874.
