Monitoring of piling was undertaken at 12–13 Usher Street in April 2001. This followed an assessment of a proposed development carried out in July 2000 (Excavations 2000, No. 291).
The assessment had revealed one or more 18th–19th-century cobbled surfaces associated with metalworking activity, followed by several episodes of 18th–19th-century dumping.
Monitoring revealed that the site stratigraphy consisted of 7m of introduced material overlying natural gravels. The first metre of material consisted of dark brown/black organic material dating approximately from the 18th century, which most probably was a reclamation deposit. The next 3m were mixed clays and would also appear to have been reclamation deposits dating from the 18th century. The final 3m consisted of rubble and dumped clays.
