Meath Street Credit Union has purchased No. 137 Thomas Street, formally the premises of O’Sullivan’s Shoes. The site is located on the northern side of Thomas Street, four doors west of the corner of Bridgefoot Street. The plot extends for 24m behind a street frontage of 7.4m, which is identical in size to the plot depicted on Rocque’s map of 1756. The site is located in the city’s zone of archaeological potential, fronting onto a street with its origins in the medieval period, if not much earlier. The standing building has been much altered over the years and has a basement 2.6m below the present level of the pavement.
A single trench was excavated by hand along the location of the ground beam and no deposits of archaeological significance were found to be present in the area to be disturbed.
