This assessment represents the fifth phase of archaeological testing of this large site, which lies outside the medieval walled town, in the southern suburb. The previous assessments suggested that the ground was very disturbed in the post-medieval period although several medieval pits were located, cut into the boulder clay. The medieval church site of St Michael le Pole (SMR 6:20) lies to the north-west of the site, and this church and part of the burial-ground were excavated in 1981.
The assessment revealed the remains of a medieval garden soil deposit, which contained sherds of medieval pottery. This deposit, mostly confined to the north-western side of the site, was 0.55–0.6m in depth, composed of green sticky clay. At least one post-medieval wall was also exposed along the northern side of the site. This area will be excavated in the coming year.
