As part of an assessment undertaken on behalf of Dublin Corporation, one test-trench was excavated toward the northern edge of St Michan’s Place, a small cul-de-sac situated to the west of Dublin Corporation’s fish market, on 1 October 2001.
The excavation was halted after opening a length of 6m owing to the proliferation of live services in the area. The results of the excavation suggest that natural gravel deposits occur at less than 1m below present ground level in this area. Masonry uncovered at the western edge of the trench possibly represented the limit of basement activity at the western street frontage.
No artefacts or features were uncovered in this small trench. Basements outside the street line of St Michan’s Place are likely to have impacted heavily on the natural stratigraphy of the area and any overlying archaeology.
