Excavation of this site, initially by Dáire O’Rourke, began in September 1998 (Excavations 1998, No. 172) and was largely complete, having been taken over by the writer, by May 2000 (Excavations 1999, No. 213; Excavations 2000, No. 269), with a small strip measuring c. 3m east–west by 2.5m along the North King Street frontage requiring excavation at a later stage.
The initial eight-month excavation revealed 469 articulated and 134 disarticulated human remains. All artefacts and stratigraphy relate to the 18th–20th centuries.
Road-widening in March 2001 required monitoring of the final stage of excavation. This revealed approximately 2.5m of made ground sealing one articulated east–west-orientated skeleton. Excavation, carried out by osteoarchaeologist Jenny Coughlan, revealed this to truncate red brick material which in turn sealed geologically deposited clays.
Post-excavation analysis of the skeletal material recovered from all phases of the excavation is ongoing. The project was initiated and funded by Dublin Corporation.
