Additional testing was carried out in tandem with a propping/bracing system proposed for the Stephen Street Upper frontage. This consisted of six additional pits, which measured, on average, 2m long by 1m wide, spaced along the street frontage. The testing revealed a continuation of the medieval/post-medieval garden soils exposed in the interior of the site during the previous assessment (Excavations 2000, No. 284). These lie between 1.6m and 2.1m below present ground level.
