Monitoring was carried out at 3 and 4 Capel Street, Dublin. The Georgian buildings were in the Dublin City area of archaeological potential and were being restored and developed as two retail outlets, with apartments in the upper storeys. Dublin City Council had recommended that the outer walls of the buildings and many of the internal fittings should be retained and restored.
It was recommended that monitoring take place during ground reduction within the building and in the yard space to the rear. The work was carried out in two phases. The first phase was carried out in April and May 2001 by Ruth Elliot (see Excavations 2001, No. 369) but was suspended owing to the instability of the rear wall of No. 3. The second phase was carried out by the writer once the wall had been stabilised and was undertaken in September and October 2001.
The site is located north of the River Liffey at the southern end of Capel Street and during the medieval period it may have lain on a narrow strip of land enclosing an inlet of the Liffey, with St Mary’s Abbey to the north-west and Dublin city to the south and south-west.
No finds or features of archaeological significance came to light during the monitoring.
