As part of an assessment undertaken on behalf of Dublin Corporation, three test-trenches were excavated within the confines of a paved area known as the Daisy Market, to the east of Dublin Corporation’s fruit market. The work was undertaken on various dates between 21 August and 2 October 2001.

No definitive evidence of archaeological activity in the area was uncovered. Eighteenth- and 19th-century basements cut deeply into the natural gravels in most areas. If any earlier deposits or features occurred in the area they may have been almost completely removed by these basements.

In the south-eastern corner of the site a substantial stone wall was uncovered. The wall, which enclosed a large area measuring 11m+ north–south, did not appear to contain any red brick within its fabric. It was cut and abutted by the surrounding basement walls and may be part of a more substantial earlier building. Although the wall is surrounded by post-medieval/modern deposits, they appear to represent the final burial of the wall, which may therefore have a substantially earlier construction date.
