Monitoring was carried out during works by South Dublin County Council for the River Camac Improvement Scheme within Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, between August and September 2001.
In May 2000 an assessment involving a paper study and field investigation was completed for the area. It was found that the proposed river improvement scheme would not encroach directly on any known archaeological site; however, the location of the Fairview Oil Mills landscape (SMR 21:8), which extends south-west close to the perimeter of works, was noted. Also noted was a curvilinear field system, a possible ecclesiastical enclosure. This may have been associated with the Two Sisters’ Well site (SMR 21:9), though the boundaries of this and the Two Sisters’ Well were outside the area of development. It was recommended that monitoring be carried out during all subsurface works.
Monitoring of topsoil-stripping took place over a period of four weeks between August and September. Sites 1–3 were found. A separate licence was subsequently requested for each site or group of archaeological features.
Site 1 was identified by some fragments of human bone and a number of cut features. The cut features contained organic soil, charcoal, iron slag, flint fragments and animal bone. Remains were disturbed by the initial topsoil clearance (see Excavations 2001, No. 340).
Site 2, where a group of three features was identified, was also excavated (see Excavations 2001, No. 341).
At Site 3 one small feature was identified. It was subsequently completely accidentally destroyed by development, and not excavated.
