During monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the proposed line of the Mourne Conduit Replacement Scheme (Aquarius Project) three small areas of archaeological activity were uncovered and subsequently excavated in advance of destruction.
Area 1 was located at the base of the south-west-facing slopes of a drumlin adjacent to an existing main road. The remains in this area consisted of a large pit, filled with charcoal-rich material, around which a number of badly truncated features were uncovered and excavated.
Area 2 was approximately 500m to the south-west of the first area and was on the top of a drumlin ridge. The remains in this area again consisted of a small number of badly truncated pits filled with charcoal-rich material.
Area 3 was approximately 50m to the south of Area 2, on the south-west-facing slope of the drumlin, and consisted of the remains of an elongated pit, the full extent of which ran outside the line of the proposed pipe.
