Monitoring took place of topsoil removal for the construction of a water pipeline and associated structures for a hydroelectric scheme at Lowrymore River, Co. Donegal. The area of this development is on the north-east side of the valley of the Lowrymore River, an extremely steep-sided river valley with scarped sides rather than ordinary riverbanks. There was no known archaeology in this area; vegetation is rough grass and heather growing on peat, and part of the pipe route runs through a small Coillte plantation of conifers.
The development involved the construction of a river weir and pipeline intake at the upper or north-west end which necessitated excavation of an area 7m by 3m on the north-east bank of the river for foundations for the structure. A c. 5–6m-wide routeway was constructed simultaneously with the laying of a 1200m-long pipeline, to get machinery into place to dig trenches and lay pipes on the steep mountainside. The construction of a powerhouse and outfall structure at the lower or southern end of the scheme necessitated the excavation of an area 10m by 9m on the north-east bank of the river. No archaeology was encountered during these excavations.
