Monitoring was carried out on the site of the proposed redevelopment of the existing sea wall at West Town on Tory Island, Co. Donegal. The site is directly south of the round tower and graveyard at West Town. It is proposed to construct a new sea wall, aligned roughly east–west, directly south of the existing sea wall along the shoreline and to add fill material between the new and existing walls.
The excavation of a c. 100m-long strip to facilitate the construction of the new wall was monitored on 11 and 12 July 2001. Strata of boulders, drift kelp, wind-blown sand and modern detritus were identified, overlying granite bedrock.
Nothing of archaeological significance was observed during the course of monitoring.
