Underwater assessment and investigation of eight marine geophysical anomalies in Killybegs Harbour and one possible archaeological site on Smooth Point, Glebe townland, Killybegs, Co. Donegal, did not reveal material of archaeological significance.
Diver investigation of all eight geophysical anomalies revealed modern debris on the seabed resulting from casual discard.
A trench was opened manually across the possible enclosure site of SMR 97:16 to an average depth of 0.8m. It showed that this is not an archaeological monument but is more suitably described as a natural spit of shingle that has accumulated at the entrance to a former inlet defined by Castle Point to the north and Rough Point to the south.
