On 14 January 2001 test-trenching was conducted on the proposed development of an old folk’s home at Ardara, Co. Donegal. A possible enclosure was located north of the river, at the foot of a south-facing hill which slopes gradually down to the bank of the river. No visible traces of an archaeological site were observed during field inspection. Bedrock was exposed in parts. A roughly circular area is evident on an aerial photograph.
One test-trench was excavated at the location of the possible enclosure. The underlying strata consisted of a dark brown peaty clay overlying a compact blue/grey sandy boulder clay, with sandstone bedrock exposed at the base of excavations. No traces of an enclosure were observed. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of testing.
