The site lies on a steep slope on the eastern bank of the River Foyle, overlooking the historic town of Derry. In advance of a housing development, a field visit had identified two areas of potential archaeology. Area 1 was a raised platform, while Area 2 was a scarped area cutting into the hillside. It was thought that these areas could have been the sites of previously unlocated Jacobite mortar batteries, as illustrated in Neville’s map of 1688–9. Certainly the view of Derry from these fields and its proximity would make the site an ideal location for a military base and attack.
Excavation, however, indicated that both areas were the result of modern activity.
