A site assessment was carried out at 8 Castle Street, Derry, prior to the proposed development of the site. Three trenches were excavated to subsoil using a mechanical digger.
Trenches 1 and 2, which were closest to the street frontage, produced evidence of basement activity datable to the 19th–20th century. The final trench was situated to the rear of the property and was found to contain no basement activity. However, no material of archaeological significance was identified within the trench.
It was concluded that no further archaeological works were required on this site.
