Two trenches were manually excavated in the basement of 23 Bishop Street, Derry, prior to renovations and refurbishments to the building, which currently functions as a shirt factory. The building was previously the Imperial Hotel and is currently listed (HB 01/19/09).
In both trenches, removal of the stone flagging revealed that the basement had been cut into subsoil, thereby removing any material of archaeological significance which may have existed on the site.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified within either of the trenches.
