Testing was carried out at 102 North Main Street, Youghal, before the redevelopment of an existing building and the construction of an extension to it. The property, linear in plan and orientated east–west, following the established medieval plot pattern, is 8.5m wide (north–south) and extends eastward from the street front for 46m. The site lies within the zone of archaeological potential for Youghal.
Two test-trenches were hand-dug to a maximum depth of 1.6m below ground level. Trench 1 (2.792m OD at ground level) was 1m square and Trench 2 (2.547m OD at ground level) was 1.5m square. A number of post-medieval rubble layers were uncovered in both trenches. At the base of Trench 1 there were two layers of medieval garden soil (1.692m OD max. depth), and two sherds of Ham Green pottery were uncovered in these layers.
