Testing took place at 100 North Main Street before the redevelopment of the site, preceded by a standing building survey. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential as identified by the Urban Archaeological Survey. The property is linear in plan, with the long side orientated north-east/south-west, which follows the established medieval plot pattern. The east boundary wall of the site, part of the town wall, is being retained.
Four test-trenches, measuring 1m2, were excavated. A layer of concrete covered all the trenches. Trenches 1 (2.141m OD), 3 (2.103m OD) and 4 (2.643m OD) had substantial rubble hard core at their surface. A number of layers were excavated and recorded and these all proved to be of 18th- and 19th-century date. No archaeological features relating to the town wall were encountered.
